We live in zone 6a and I have been gardening and cooking for years. This blog is an opportunity for me to share with you my success and those failures that come about on occasion. Plus, I want to hear from all the gardeners and bakers and cooks out there and learn from you. Feel free to share your ideas.

Squirrels
If anyone has a sure fire way to keep squirrels out of the tomato beds I would love to know your solutions.I had one Black Krim ripening, and this morning I found it on the ground next to the plant. Although I had heavy plastic fencing around my tomatoes to keep the deer out, it did nothing for the squirrels. I now have plastic fencing on top of the entire bed and the bottom portion of the fencing is weighed down by bricks around the perimeter.

I have the same problem - chipmunks, squirels, deer, groundhogs and now racoons all LOVE my tomatoes. I just figured out of 60+ plants I'd better get something edible myself :)
ReplyDeleteI shoot them! Seriously...lost lots of plants/veggies/fruits to ground squirrels the first year I started gardening. I ended up using them for target practice...and now I'm a very good shot. Hope I don't offend anyone, but it was only after I tried dozens of ways to get rid of the buggers and lost pounds of food.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely hate squirrels!!! If you can't shoot them, trap them. I trapped a couple dozen two years ago and all was well for an entire gardening season. Then a new group moved in.
ReplyDeleteWell I cannot shoot them because of the residential area we live in. Has anyone tried repels all, which is a spray?
ReplyDeleteI agree with others, shoot them and/or trap them. I do both successfully. I use a spring loaded pellet gun, they are very quiet and your neighbors won't know. If you don't want to go that route, buy a havahart trap from Home Depot. Get the big one that is made for racoons, they cost about $50 bucks.
